| Changes at Our Farm! For 11 years, we were fortunate to have been able to open up our small farm to the public during the months of September and October. Unfortunately, we will no longer be able to do so. We were contacted by the State labor commission last year and informed that we would need to provide workers' compensation insurance for all family members whom assisted during harvest. In addition, we would need to pay wages and make the appropriate withholdings for each person. It did not matter, whether the person worked for 10 hours or 10 minutes. Many of our family members come out and assist during a 2 day harvest period. The amount of administrative oversight involved for a family to come together and volunteer at the farm seemed over cumbersome. Coincidentally, we were also informed by our insurance company that if we continue to allow the public onto the property, our rates would triple. After much thought and discussion, we have come to the decision that we will no longer have the pumpkin patch open to the public. We will continue to farm our same crops and hope to sell them wholesale or delivery only. We thank everyone for their patronage over the years. It has been an honor to have shared in your great memories of our pumpkin patch! Richard and Joanne |
